Sea Breeze Salad, 1968 – A Mid-Century Recipe Re-Run - Mid-Century Menu (2024)

I was digging through the archives this week for a yummy gelatin to whip up for a Memorial Day picnic, when I came across this post from August of 2013! Since I am making it again, I thought I would give you guys a re-run of it as well. Enjoy!

This week we have a gelatin that is decidedly NOT gross. Sea Breeze Salad!

Sea Breeze Salad

IngredientsDirections

This thing is basically jelled lemon pie filling with pineapple in it. Nothing bad here. Surprising, isn’t it? Well, we were invited to a picnic earlier last month where I knew there would be kids present and I didn’t want to completely gross the kids out. I was told to bring a salad, so I picked this.

Tom peered over my shoulder as I was cooking. “So what’s going into this to ruin the lemon pie filling? Cheese? Tuna?”

“Nope.”

“Olives?”

“Nope. Nothing.”

“Nothing?!?”

“Well, pineapple is going in, but nothing gross.”

“Are you sure? Give me that recipe.”

“Here.”

“What the…this isn’t a salad! This is a dessert!”

I shook my head. “Nope. Read the name. It says Sea Breeze Salad.”

“That’s garbage. There is Dream Whip in this. It’s a dessert.”

“Look, the concept of a salad used to be different, okay? According to 1960’s thinking, this is a salad. See? Sea. Breeze. Salad. SALAD!”

“Fine, but if the kids go into sugar shock it is going to be your fault.”

“So, how is it?”

“Really good, but this is totally a dessert.”

The Verdict: It’s A Dessert

From The Tasting Notes:

Very good, if you like lemon pie. Especially good if you like lemon pie but not meringue. This basically tastes like a lemon pie with pineapple added to it, and a lemon-flavored whipped topping. The pineapple was actually a really good addition. We polished this thing off in a few days and probably gained five pounds in the process.

We just had a church luncheon where sandwiches and dessert were provided and members were asked to bring side dishes. I took a plain potato salad. Others brought salads like this, even tomato aspic!. A few of us chuckled about the “salads” and I told them about The Astronaut Wives Club and all the retro food.

Thanks for sharing this! I love lemony things that don’t require me to actually sqeeze or zest lemons. 🙂

I actually tried this not long ago! Only I used Cool Whip rather than Dream Whip–it’s easier. Just mix it into the reserved Jello mixture instead of the prepared Dream Whip. I also used a mixture of lime and lemon Jello (one package lime and two packages lemon). It was really VERY green, but I kind of liked the retro feel of that. It was a huge hit at my dinner party. (Yes, I am the sort of person who serves experimental Jello salads at dinner parties.)

Made this last night (with help from my 8 year old daughter) for a potluck at work. Everyone really likes it!!! Some of the things you come up with are disgusting, hilarious, bizarre or all the above, but this one is a definite winner.

I’m with Erika; don’t like meringue and love lemon. Will try this for sure!

Also, since I love lemon with raspberry, I’ll probably add some for garnish as well.

My great grandmother used to make jello with fruit in it like this. And she’d always insist “it’s not a dessert, it’s a salad!!”

Our family has quoted that randomly ever since.
